Structural Health Monitoring
Structural Health Monitoring, or SHM, is a category of sensing technology that is capable of monitoring and assessing the loading history and fatigue damage in an aircraft, vessel, structure or machinery. SHM devices can record, process and assess accumulated sensor data for a variety of mechanical and environmental factors affecting structural health. SHM devices can address a wide spectrum of applications, such as in mechanical components of a fixed wing or a rotary aircraft, civil structures such as bridges and buildings, machines, windmills, gas or oil pipes and marine vessels.
SHM devices can operate standalone or as an integrated sensor or recording device in a variety of applications where its ultra-low power consumption, low cost and multi-sensing capabilities can provide accurate assessments based on neural network principles of data processing. These devices can provide autonomous monitoring for many years without requiring maintenance or post-processing.
